NB DofE Silver Group - Route Cards
The following information is to help you write route cards for your upcoming expedition. Your team are required to complete a route card as part of your training. The easiest way to do this, is for the team to split into pairs, and to complete 1 day of the route per pair.
Below are PDF files which include high resolution maps and an editable Word Document Route Card. I have also attached an old, none related, route card which shows you the type of information we are looking for (this is a different route to yours!).
For ease, you should set up a free OS Map account on your EDofE. This will make measuring distance, working out height gain and grid references far easier. To do this, log into your EDofE, go to the Expedition Section and click Mapping. Follow instructions from there.
I have also added links below to GPX files. These are the files from my OS mapping, from which the maps were printed. If you import these to your own OS Map software, it will import the routes.
The attached maps are best viewed online, either on a PC or Laptop. You can also print if you prefer. You can then use them for reference on your own OS Maps software.
Filling in the route card:
Base your walking speed on 4km per hour.
Routes are marked in blue on the maps
Each day starting no later than 10am
Each day must add up to at least 7 hours, apart from day 3 which can finish at lunchtime. 7 hours is the minimum number of hours per day, set by DofE but does include breaks. If you were to have roughly 10 minutes rest time for every hour and 30 minutes for lunch, then this should be fine.
Please complete at least 8 legs of the route cards and add more as required.
Use obvious features to indicate legs. i.e. bridges, road junctions, woodland etc.
Escape notes are places where you could get help in an emergency.
Once complete, please email the Word Doc to me antony@venturingout.org.uk
If you are unsure about any of this or have any questions, please email me and I’ll get back to you.
